Despite the almighty and adventurous spirit I have exhibited thus far on this latest crusade of knowledge, I can’t help but make note of the eerie calmness that envelopes this nation. With deep Islamic conservative rituals at play, people pass one another on the streets as strangers instead of fellow countryman. I can hear thousands of silent screams from the populace, and the noise is deafening. Indeed it makes for interesting observation, however I do wonder the length of time that such a peace can remain with a modern countries people so contained. On a positive note, it also makes for a flirtatious vibrance among the youthful Western tourists and expatriates alike. Smirks are given as Americans and Europeans converse, for the lives they once held dear are now veiled in secrecy. Certainly, I have been one known to smirk.

How To Draw An Owl

Mark Twain on the German language

A dog is “der Hund”; a woman is “die Frau”; a horse is “das Pferd”; now you put that dog in the genitive case, and is he the same dog he was before? No, sir; he is “des Hundes”; put him in the dative case and what is he? Why, he is “dem Hund.” Now you snatch him into the accusative case and how is it with him? Why, he is “den Hunden.” But suppose he happens to be twins and you have to pluralize him- what then? Why, they’ll swat that twin dog around through the 4 cases until he’ll think he’s an entire international dog-show all in is own person. I don’t like dogs, but I wouldn’t treat a dog like that- I wouldn’t even treat a borrowed dog that way. Well, it’s just the same with a cat. They start her in at the nominative singular in good health and fair to look upon, and they sweat her through all the 4 cases and the 16 the’s and when she limps out through the accusative plural you wouldn’t recognize her for the same being. Yes, sir, once the German language gets hold of a cat, it’s goodbye cat. That’s about the amount of it.

- Mark Twain’s Notebook

Outskirts of Laughlin. Beautiful Desert.

A sliver of insanity, a most hectic lunacy is what is required to write. The depths of depravity inspire. Not love, not fortune, will suffice as a better source. Fair tradeoff? The shades may change with the seasons, but the grass never fails in looking gorgeous, over there.

Point du Hoc, Normandy, France ‘04
I played in the Nazi-built bunkers from where they fired down on Omaha Beach and killed almost 3,000 Americans in one single day. From this point, Point du Hoc, Rangers scaled the cliffs with ladders while under machine gun fire, and kept climbing and fighting until the area was secured. Massive bomb craters cover the entire area.

Reichstag, Berlin, Germany ‘06
I climbed to the top of a building that was once the center of the Third Reich, was hit by more than 1 million bullets, was decimated by Soviet shelling and Allied bombing, and provided the scene for where one of the most iconic war pictures of all time was taken.
